Glass is structural. A bonded windshield helps the roof hold its shape and gives the passenger airbag something to push against, so a windshield is not simply a window.
A small chip away from the driver line can often be filled rather than replaced. Once a crack runs, spreads to an edge, or sits where the driver looks, the glass is replaced. Temperature swings make a crack travel, which is why a chip that was stable all summer moves on the first cold morning.
Many newer cars carry a forward camera mounted to the windshield for lane keeping and automatic braking. Move the glass and you move the camera. It has to be recalibrated afterwards or those systems are working from the wrong reference, and that is accounted for as part of the job rather than left to you to discover.
Tempered side and rear glass breaks into pieces rather than cracking. That means vacuuming the door cavity and the seat rails properly, not just fitting new glass, or you will be finding fragments for months.
If it has been hit and it also needs mechanical work, it does not need to go anywhere else.
